After a weekend getaway at the West Baden Springs Hotel to celebrate my husband’s birthday, we discovered West Baden’s afternoon tea and knew we had to return to experience it ourselves. The following weekend, we made a reservation and drove an hour back to French Lick!
After sitting down and taking in the beautiful atrium, we checked out the selection of gourmet teas to choose from. I chose the White Ginger Pear tea, while Max chose the Mountain Oolong Tea. I loved the White Ginger Pear tea so much I almost bought my own to take home from West Baden Mercantile Company, conveniently located in the lobby.
When enjoying an afternoon tea, embrace the proper etiquette of eating with your hands, so don’t hesitate to ditch the utensils. The tea service comes in three courses and is served on a beautiful three-tiered tray. Start with the finger sandwiches - ours included cucumber sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, and smoked salmon blinis. Next are the scones, ours being chocolate chip. For the scone course, grab a knife and spread the clotted cream and jams. Finally, enjoy the sweet treats or petit fours. Our selection featured cheesecake-stuffed strawberries (Max’s favorite), mini lemon tarts (my favorite), and delicious mini sticky toffee puddings.
If you want to bring the tea party home, visit West Baden Mercantile Company in the lobby. Purchase any tea from the afternoon tea menu and even grab the exact tea set used during West Baden’s afternoon tea. This way you can recreate your afternoon at home anytime!
